In Lovecraft's Shadow, 1

  1. IN LOVECRAFT'S SHADOW, 1 - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on a 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the book, "In Lovecraft's Shadow," by August Derleth, published by Vanderburgh in 1998, under the Mycroft & Moran imprint.

This commission was unique in that I met periodically with the editor Joe Wrzos and project consultant Helen de la Ree to discuss how I would go about illustrating this book. Since we are good friends, I've known Helen for over 50 years, and Joe for about 30 years, it was fun discussing with them the design of endpapers, title page, full pagers, story headings and a variety of icons that would be used throughout the book.

Normally, I would not even accept an assignment if an editor wanted to get that involved with the artwork, but this job was different because the publisher was a minor private enterprize individual who was not paying much for the effort that Joe was going to put into producing this book, and since Joe was a friend I decided to do it.

When we got together to talk about it, the expectation was that I would do perhaps two or three illustrations for the book, but the more we talked the more artwork was required and it just grew and grew into the large project that it became. We decided to do it as a fun project in spite of a lack of funds from the publisher.

And that is how this large book got produced. The publisher was pleased with our effort, but would you believe it, he tried to get me to illustrate another book for him, expecting me to do the artwork for nothing again!

I did this artwork for Joe because I expected I would be able to sell my originals to art collectors, but editor Wrzos purchased it all from me when the project was done.
